Trucking companies ordered new big rigs in record numbers for the second straight month in August as they raced to get production slots next year at heavily-booked factories.
Fleets last month ordered 53,100 Class 8 trucks, the largest vehicles used to haul goods on long-distance routes, according to a preliminary report from ACT Research. Orders jumped 150% from the same month a year ago and beat the previous monthly record of 52,400, set in July.
The August peak in orders followed a seven-month ordering spree that drove equipment manufacturers in July to open up 2019 slots for new orders, months ahead of their usual schedule. The backlog for trucks on order is at a record high.
